Description

He's finally home! I've been working on adopting a macaw for 2 years, and my dream finally came true. This is Mickey, a 28 year old scarlet macaw adopted from a parrot rescue in Georgia. YES parrot rescues EXIST! Most people think of only dogs, cats, and sometimes horses having rescues, but birds are in just as dire need of help as other pets.

Most people would say parrots do not make good pets -- they are expensive, loud, temperamental, intelligent, and live for decades. You think your aunt's cat that lived to be 22 was old? Most parrots live to be 30+, even the tiny ones, and the medium to large ones can easily hit 50-80 if not 100 years old in some cases. The truth is, parrots make incredible companions but to a very few people. If you are interested in sharing the rest of your life with a feathered companion, check out local rescues. DO NOT buy a baby parrot from a breeder -- it's not just that hundreds of thousands of parrots need homes, it's also because raising a baby parrot is ill advised unless you are a professional, avian vet, or behavioralist. There are so many beautiful birds like Mickey who are wishing for a second chance and someone to love them, please adopt. If you have any questions about where to find a rescue in your area, there are many online groups and Facebook pages that can help you out -- or send me a message.

Now that the speech is over, this is Mickey the macaw. He's got some problems here and there and we have a long road ahead of us, but I am excited for the journey we will take for he next 20+ years (the average lifespan of a scarlet macaw is 50-60 years, but they have reached into the 80s in captivity, so he could be around for 20 years or 50 more years -- yeah I'd be past retirement). If you have questions about birds, feel free to contact me. Meanwhile, back to icing my arm. Mickey politely told me I was doing something wrong by biting my arm at a fraction of the pressure he could inflict if he wanted -- nonetheless, I have some swollen golfball sized welts on my arm where he got me. Expect a visit or two to the hospital if you own a parrot.
